Smartlipo laser lipolysis is a body-sculpting procedure to melt and remove fat that is unresponsive to dieting and exercising and tighten the skin. To achieve the best results, it is typically performed in conjunction with suction assisted lipectomy (liposuction) to remove the melted fat and further contour the body. This procedure may be applied to nearly any area of the body. Smartlipo with liposuction is used effectively to remove a double chin and lift the chin, reduce the size of the arms and tighten upper arm skin, and remove fat of the lower abdomen and firm the lower abdominal skin.
Smartlipo with liposuction is not a replacement for proper exercise and diet. Instead, Smartlipo with liposuction is a procedure to reduce stubborn areas where fat accumulates. Ideal surgical candidates are those already in good physical condition but who have difficulty losing weight in certain areas.

Smartlipo with liposuction may be performed under local anesthesia, with the patient awake for smaller areas, or under general anesthesia, with the patient asleep for larger areas Tumescent fluid is infused to provide local pain control and limit blood loss. Smartlipo is then performed. The laser has three key functions. First, the laser liquefies the fat, making it easier to remove, causing less trauma to the surrounding tissues, resulting in less post-operative swelling. Second, the laser coagulates small blood vessels, causing less bleeding intraoperatively, which results in less bruising post-operatively (compared to traditional liposuction). Third, the laser heats the dermis of the skin, giving a tightened appearance.
Through the same tiny incision, a narrow tube or “cannula” is inserted between the muscle and the skin. The cannula is attached to a pressurized suction device to remove the fatty tissue beneath the skin. For larger areas, power assisted liposuction is performed to remove the fat and create a slim aesthetic appearance. The incisions are closed with stitches and a supportive garment is applied.
Liposuction may be performed on an outpatient basis. If multiple areas are treated at one time, the procedure lasts more than 5 hours, or the amount of tissue removed is more than 5 liters, the patient is monitored overnight in the hospital.
The combination of Smartlipo with liposuction allows our patients to return to their regular activities faster than they would with traditional procedures. The length of the recovery will depend on how many areas are treated and how much fat is removed. The patient needs to walk several times per day, from the day of surgery. A support garment is worn for several weeks after the surgery. Patients are typically sore for only few days post-operatively and the discomfort is easily managed with oral pain medications. While complications may occur, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the directions given after surgery.
