Sometimes dieting and exercise are not enough to improve the appearance of the waistline. Pregnancies and weight gain often, followed by weight loss, result in both stretched out skin and extra skin. Neither of these problems respond to exercise. In such cases, a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) A procedure in which a large horizontal ellipse of skin and fat is excised from the anterior lower abdomen, and an upper abdominal flap is stretched to the suprapubic incision and sewn in place; the umbilicus is exteriorized through an incision in the flap at the proper level. Resulting in a flatter tummy. Liposuction is often used to enhance the improvement in the abdominal contour and accentuate the waist and abdominal musculature.
The procedure is tailored to accommodate the needs of each patient. This is determined by the patient’s body shape. The body lift procedure begins with the patient lying in the prone position. An incision is made along the lower back from one hip to the other. The tissue is dissected over the buttocks and lateral thighs and pulled upward. The excess tissue is removed and the skin is pulled taught. The wound is repaired with sutures. The patient is then turned onto the back and the incision is continued onto the abdomen. An abdominoplasty is then performed. It is often beneficial to perform this procedure in two stages. The first procedure addresses the most problematic area for the patient. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the patient is hospitalized for one to several days post-operatively.
Generally, post-operative instructions call for rest and limited activity for the first few days. However, it is imperative that the patient walk on the day of the procedure and several times a day, each day post-operatively. Bandages are applied immediately following surgery to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts. A special support garment is worn for six weeks post-operatively. Post-operative pain is minimized by the use of Exparel, a long acting form of Marcaine that provides post-operative pain relief over three days. This decreases the number of pain pills patients take post-operatively. While complications may occur, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the instructions given after surgery.
