Liposuction (or suction assisted lipectomy) is a body-sculpting procedure to remove fat that is unresponsive to dieting and exercising. This procedure can be applied to nearly any area of the body. Liposuction results in a slimmer and better proportioned figure. Liposuction is used effectively to reduce love handles, saddlebags, a double-chin, a bulge around the waistline, or other unsightly fatty deposits in order to develop a better shape and create a more beautiful body.

Liposuction is not a replacement for proper exercise and diet. Instead, liposuction is a reduction procedure for stubborn areas where fat accumulates. Ideal surgical candidates are those already in good physical condition but having stubborn areas that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Liposuction is performed with the patient asleep, under general anesthesia. Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube or “cannula” is inserted between the muscle and the skin. The cannula is attached to a pressurized suction device to remove the fatty tissue beneath the skin. The excess fat is removed and a slim, aesthetic appearance is created. The incisions are closed with stitches and a supportive garment is applied.
Dr. Stiles uses the tumescent technique to decrease blood loss and minimize bruising. She also uses a power assisted liposuction device to minimize the trauma to the tissues and reduce post-operative discomfort.
Liposuction may be performed on an outpatient basis. If multiple areas are treated at one time, the procedure lasts more than 5 hours, or the amount of tissue removed is more than 5 liters, the patient is monitored overnight in the hospital. Liposuction surgery is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unattractive focal deposits of fat.
New techniques allow for faster recovery from liposuction procedures. The length of the recovery will depend on how extensive of an operation the patient undergoes. The patient needs to walk several times per day, from the day of surgery. A support garment is worn for six weeks after the surgery. Patients are typically sore for a few days post-operatively and post-operative pain is typically effectively managed with oral pain medications. While complications may occur, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the directions given after surgery.
