Large protruding ears are often the source of ridicule for many children. This may lead to poor self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, and poor school performance. This congenital deformity is one of the most common abnormalities of the head and neck. Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a procedure designed to reshape the ear to complement the face. It is performed on the outer ear, called the auricle.
The auricle is comprised of folds of cartilage that are covered by skin. This process starts developing before birth and continues in subsequent years.
The ears stick out because the “Y-shaped” bend (the Crura of Antihelix) is missing. During an otoplasty, two cuts are made, one on the front and one on the back of the ear. The cartilage is abraded and contoured to create a more attractive appearance of the ear.
Patients need to wear a headband for one month post-operatively and must refrain from sports and strenuous physical activity for 6 weeks post-operatively. Timing of this procedure depends upon the patient’s maturity and desire to have it done.
